The Vinyl Chair Makeover

Jenny from The Little Green Notebook did an awesome post the other day about a vinyl chair she made over.  It was one of those seriously why didn’t I think of that moments!

If you follow me on instagram you’ll remember my photo of the super cheap vinyl chair. I bought it from Goodwill for $4.99.   Here’s a reminder of what it looked like.

The photo actually looks way better than it does in real life,  it really screams I’m fake leather!!!  I just couldn’t pass up the price but once I got it home it went into my furniture pile in the garage. (Yes I have a pile.) Once I read Jenny’s post though I thought what the hell I’ll give it a try, seriously if it doesn’t turn out I’ve spent more at Starbucks in one visit than on this chair.

Once I cleaned the chair with warm soapy water, I used Rust-Oleum Painter’s  Ultra Cover 2x Coverage in Satin Canyon Black.

I was afraid it was going to stay sticky or when it dried it would end up cracking or peeling once someone actually sat on it.

I let it dry for 2 whole days before touching it or bringing it inside and up to my office, and that was probably the key to the project making sure it was throughly dry.  It’s pretty amazing the spray paint completed adhered to the chair and it honestly feels like the chair wasn’t even painted!

The chair looks shinier in the photos than it actually is and I probably used about a half a can of spray paint so the chair was still way less than $10.00!  I love that I have an extra chair in my home office for when my daughter needs help on her homework in the evening.

The throw is the Eivor blanket from Ikea and the pillow was made by Paul David (nicest person ever) and the fabric is called Bettina from Pottery Barn from years ago that I bought at Calico Corners.

Goodwill better watch out because I may just go and swipe every vinyl chair I find now!

    1. Love the spray painted chair! I have an old chair in my laundry room that needs some TLC. This is the perfect inspiration!

    1. So I’m curious now that you have had the chair in there a while….still no cracking with use? I’m seriously considering doing this!

    1. I can’t tell from the picture – what color did the trim turn out? Are they still brass? The chair looks amazing!
