Now that I have your attention, I’m going to admit total failure with my One Room Challenge. I’ve bought some things for the bedroom to get going on it but honestly I’m just not feeling it and I’ve been having a heck of a time coming up with a complete design plan. I was afraid if I rushed through it I’d end up with a completed room I wasn’t happy with.
About the time I planned on starting the master bedroom for the ORC I got the itch to get moving on our kitchen so if it’s alright with all of you I’d like to share my kitchen with you instead! (I know total rule breaker!) Once I got started with some small changes things just kept happening and more and more money was being spent.
Am I the only one who starts a room only to complete another room instead?
So here is the kitchen when we moved into the house a few years ago.
Very little has changed since we moved in. (I did makeover a piece of furniture I picked up on the side of the road though!)
I was hoping to do a full gut remodel. I’m not a fan of dark cabinets, I didn’t care for the slate floors and there was no backsplash, the hardware was very scratched up and the black outlets behind the counter drove me nuts.
So I had new floors quoted and after my jaw hit the floor I decided we’re living with the floors for the time being. I also decided that as much as I don’t care for dark wood cabinets for resale reasons in the type of home we live in people want wood cabinets not painted ones.
Because my mindset was we’re remodeling the kitchen I’ve done nothing to it including organizing it and it’s a BIG ‘OL HOT MESS! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought double and triples of items and then had to throw food out because it’s gone bad.
One of the reasons for the mess is we do not have a pantry and food was sorta going here and there and everywhere.
I’m going to warn you the after photos probably aren’t going to be earth shattering but I do hope I’ll be able to show you all how I organized my kitchen without a pantry, personalize our space and work with what I have and be happy with it! As we all know sometimes we have to make the best of what we have.
Here’s a little of what is going on at the moment. I’m organizing everything in sections and all like things are going to be together in one place.
The black handles have been removed and I’m spraying them with Rust-Oleum Metallic Oil Bronze Spray Paint to match my faucet and new light fixtures.
Everything in all the cabinets have been emptied. I threw out any old food, anything that was broken and I donated anything I had more than one of.
I made a trip to Walmart and bought a lot of food storage containers. Mostly I bought the Better Homes and Gardens Flip-Tite items. If you buy just one you can get a free year of Better Homes and Gardens magazine too! I wanted clear containers so I knew when things were getting low. No joke I threw away 3 empty cereal boxes in my purge!
I also bought the premium grip shelf liner and lined all the drawers so things would stop sliding around so much!
Next week I will show you inside the cabinets! They turned out great! I can’t believe it took me so long to get things done!
My other plans besides organizing is to add an industrial shelving unit in the kitchen eat in area so I can store our everyday dishes. My daughter sets the table and my thoughts are the dishes will be right next to the table, keeping her out of the kitchen area while I cook.
Here’s a list of everything that needs to get done.
1. Curtain for the window.
2. Herbs and containers for the window.
3. Hang already purchased artwork.
4. Finish organizing.
5. Clean cabinets.
6. Make 2 pieces of art for the kitchen.
7. Replace sink drain covers.
8. Clean new light fixtures.
9. Buy barstools.
10. Buy wicker storage baskets for industrial shelving unit.
11. Install backsplash.
12. Install painted cabinet hardware.
13. New towels, rugs, accessories.
So there you have it! I hope ya’ll will forgive me but I promise the kitchen will be good!!
