Back in November 2013 I participated in Linda’s One Room Challenge over at Calling it Home. I chose to makeover our master bathroom and was super happy with the results. It even got featured over at Apartment Therapy!
Here’s the catch, guess what happens when you makeover your bathroom? I’ll tell ya, the shabby chic feminine style bedroom ends up looking awful and the rooms look completely unrelated. Want proof?
In all honestly the bedroom really never was quite us, the comforter was bought on a whim before we even purchased the house. (Don’t do this!)
A few problems came with redecorating the bedroom one being I’m not sure how much longer we’ll be living in our home (a future post with an explanation is coming soon) so spending a ton of money on items that may not work in our new home seems silly to me but I’m also not going to just live for the next house and since we’ll still be in this house for another year I want to enjoy it and make it look and feel good. I want to be PRESENT in our home regardless of the circumstances, just smart about it.
I decided to paint the walls wedding bells by Valspar. I’m not usually a white paint on the walls type of gal but it’s a good neutral for resale and I wanted to try it out because I’ve seen such great results from others.
I kept all the furniture I previously had and repurposed them by repainting them bell tower from Valspar (it’s the wall color from the bathroom, which will help the flow of the two spaces) I purchased a lamp from West Elm, some new bedding from Target and mainly shopped my house. My big splurge was the moroccan wedding blanket. I wanted a real one, I think they are beautiful and I realize they are becoming super popular and there are some great knock offs happening but I wanted the real deal. I’m a big believer if you really love something and you believe you will own in for years to come than go for it, it will make you happy and it will elevate your space.
Another change that needed to happen was I needed to put my desk in our room. I’m not normally a fan of having a desk in the bedroom but the small loft space I previously worked in is right next to my 2 year old son’s room. I work while he naps and he is a very light sleeper so it just wasn’t working! That’s just it your home should be something that works for you however that may be and my bedroom is my favorite room in our home so I actually really like working in our room. (I will say we have an actual home office in our basement where my husband works and where we keep all our important papers.)
The desk is from Target. I just switched out the knob for a stone agate one. The chair is an old bamboo chair I already owned and I just sprayed oil bronze to match the desk. The fabric is the same fabric I used for the bathroom valance.
The vanity area just got freshened up, some new greek key fabric, I painted a mirror that actually belonged to the Ethan Allen dresser I made over for Cooper’s nursery. The bench was recovered using left over fabric from the master bathroom. The small mirrors are from Target, the felt garland is from West Elm and the off white and gold plates are from an auction my mom and I went to over 23 years ago!
The cabinet has been sitting in my garage for over 2 years. I had plans on painting it. It didn’t happened. I cleaned it up with some oil polish and used some brasso for the hardware. It is currently holding a whole mess of Cooper’s toys.
My chair is back in the master bedroom. It was in Cooper’s nursery for over a year but now that he’s a little older I moved it out so he can have more room to play. The chair is one of my favorite things in my house, probably because naps and reading happen in it!
I feel like I’m not 100% done with the room yet but for now I’m 100% done working on it. Paw Patrol and playing choo choo trains are sorta high on the to do list at the moment!!
