My daughter just finished her first year at DePaul University. She made the decision to stay in Chicago this summer because she has a job and just landed her first internship. DePaul offers limited housing options after freshman year so we decided it was best she rent a place for the next 3 years.
She found a studio in the city that is affordable and in a great area but it is small! I’m talking under 300 sq feet small. I know you all love a good before and after so let’s start with the before.
This was a challenging project. The apartment was small, dirty and had not been painted in years. The plan was to make it bright, clean and to chose pieces of furniture that would serve multiple purposes. I could not be happier that The RoomPlace stepped in to help make Sloan’s apartment a homey yet functional space. The pieces from The RoomPlace really were the perfect starting point to the room design!
There is not room for a couch and a bed so I chose the Donovan Trundle Bed. It was the perfect choice. The piece serves as a couch during the day and a bed at night. The trundle slides out super easy and has another twin mattress for guest (me)!
I wanted to create zones even though the space is small. A living room, kitchen and dining room. It was important to find a chair for the living area so I decided to buy a sofa/bed on Maker&Son for my daughter and her guest. The Marlo Charcoal chair was the perfect choice. It is compact but yet roomy enough to be able to curl up in. I may have sat in the chair for an entire day after I finished up working on the project.
My favorite piece in the room is the Parkview Dresser. The drawers are deep which is great because she needs all the storage she can get. The dresser also serves as a television console. I love that the dresser doesn’t look like a bedroom dresser but more like a beautiful piece of furniture that can go anywhere. Everyone who has visited the apartment mentions how much they love this dresser!
The Janis Table Lamp is sitting on the dresser. The glass helps not take up too much visual space in the room. The jasmine rug helps define the area as the living room area from the kitchen area. The rug has 3 things I love the most the neutral color, the texture that helps warm the room and it’s also super soft!
I gave you a peek of the kitchen above but here’s the before photo.
The area you haven’t seen yet is a small nook off to the side. I’m talking so small that the previous owner had a full size bed in that spot and the bed covered the closet door (that’s why you see the clothing rack in the first photo in the living room area.
This table is going to be the workhorse in the room because not only will it be used for meals but for a desk for homework and as a vanity for her to put her make up on at. I love how sleek and pretty the Vicky Dinette is. The mirror is also from The RoomPlace but no longer available but you can find a similar one here.
I cannot tell you how much fun this project was. If you are looking for stylish and affordable furniture and home accessories in the Chicago area even if it’s for a small studio space like this one please check out The RoomPlace!
