Would You Ever?

would you vacation alone

It was my birthday on Friday. My husband and son took me to dinner and also gave me a birthday card with a little surprise in it. They surprised me with an overnight getaway. The trip was only for me all by myself. So I have to ask…could you and would you go on an overnight trip by yourself?

My trip was to Tahoe, California which is about an hour from our house. I left early Saturday morning and gloriously listened to whatever I wanted to on the radio. A mama can only listen to the Moana soundtrack so many times. On the way to Tahoe I stopped in Truckee, CA for lunch and a spicy bloody Mary. Afterwards, I walked around the town for a few hours. I’d forgotten how many times I get asked to look at the toys when I’m with my 5 year old. It was also nice to go into every single home store without an ounce of guilt I was boring my husband to death.

After I was done shopping I made my way to Tahoe. You know how when you’re traveling and you see cute little stores on the side of the road and you think to yourself I should stop and check  them out but you never actually do? Well I actually did. My favorite was a small organic grocery store. Not only did they have an incredible selection of foods to chose from but they had amazing organic beauty products. I treated myself to some new shampoo and deep conditioner and a face and eye mask for later in the evening. (Yea I know…slow down party girl!)

I wasn’t able to check into my bed and breakfast until around 4 and still had some time so I decided to do some house hunting. We’re looking to get a second home at some point (to rent out or Airbnb) and thought this would be a great time to check out the area. I’d like a small little fixer upper.

Next up was checking into my bed and breakfast. The place was actually a home that a couple rented rooms out to guests. It was incredibly beautiful and they had a private beach on Lake Tahoe for their guests to use . I checked in, met the owners, unpacked and headed back out to dinner after walking the beach for a bit. I was hoping to go to the movies. (Have you ever gone to the movies alone?) I especially like going to the movies in small little beach towns. Unfortunately there was only 1 movie and that was The Incredibles so that was a hard pass for this gal. For dinner I decided instead of eating at a table I would eat at the bar. I ended up talking to a really nice couple and the bartender and they gave me a lot of helpful information about the area.

After dinner I was starting to get tired so I headed back to the B&B.  I planned on going straight to my room, reading magazines, giving myself a manicure and facial. Instead the other guests and owner were in the living room and I decided to say hello and talk to them. (Something I normally would not of done.) We ended up talking for 3 hours. I ended up not reading any magazines or giving myself a manicure but I did take a super long hot shower without any interruptions and I did give myself a facial. I basically passed out when my head hit the pillow and slept like a log!

The next morning I was treated to a delicious breakfast and I afterwards I packed up and headed back home to celebrate Father’s Day.

I’m a huge introvert and I like time alone to recharge. With that said I was still a little skeptical about the bed and breakfast and even eating at the bar and deciding to start a conversation with strangers. If I’m going to do things alone it’s usually sitting at a table with my phone or a magazine. I’ve also stayed alone at an Airbnb alone before when traveling to Chicago but it was different because I didn’t interact with anyone.

I have to tell you that I thought the whole experience was pretty great. I’m so glad I kept my mind open to new experiences and that I pushed myself out of my comfort level. So once again I have to ask would you or could you go away somewhere by yourself?? If so where would you go and what would you do?

    1. What a lovely little trip! I am an introvert too and not sure I would want to go alone. You know how chatty and friendly Garry is so I rely on him for all interactions with vacationers. This really inspires me to get outside of myself. I feel like you got back in touch with yourself as you, not Mom or wife. I think that’s important!

    1. This is one of my favorite blog posts you’ve done. Alone time is crucial for parents especially and it is wonderful that your family gave you this opportunity to recharge and discover a new place. I think this is a trip that will grow more and more special to you as time goes on.

    1. I think it’s the sort of trip every woman should try and do once. I honestly was uncomfortable at times but also proud of myself and glad I pushed myself out of my comfortable bubble. It was a really good time! I’d like to do it again for a long weekend but I’d chose to do a more traditional Airbnb where I have a place to recharge.

    1. Thank you! It pushed me out of my comfort zone but that’s something I’m working on a lot this year! I’m for sure going to do it again!!
